Relationships and Sex Education (RSE)

This page provides information about our approach to teaching RSE Here you will find our policy as well as information about curriculum content for each year group. Unlike other aspects of the curriculum, some elements of the RSE content are appropriate to be taught at different stages rather than to our mixed age classes.

The focus in primary schools is on teaching the fundamental building blocks and characteristics of positive relationships, with particular reference to friendships, family relationships, and relationships with other children and with adults.

We follow the curriculum recommended by the PSHE Association, which provides the basis for our PSHE scheme of work.

For RSE our scheme of work is CWP Teaching RSE with Confidence in Primary Schools. This reflects recent developments in PSHE and the Statutory Guidance for Relationships Education, RSE and Health Education.

CWP have devised lessons which focus on families, relationships, safeguarding/keeping children safe and added Additional units on Respect and Equality. This resource encourages children to develop the skills of listening, empathy, talking about feelings and relationships with families and friends.

In Reception the focus is on families and friendships. From Year 1 children will focus on babies needing care and support and different types of families. From Year 2 the children learn the names of body parts, the differences between males and females. We also use the NSPCC ‘Pants are Private’ materials. Importantly, children will learn to recognise unsafe and risky situations and how to ask for help. Year 3 build on this by recognising the importance of personal space. The curriculum builds as children progress through the school and continues to develop their knowledge and skills as they learn about the physical and emotional changes of puberty in years 4 and 5 and about reproduction in Year 6.

Where children have not been taught some content due to closures as a result of the pandemic, content from the previous year group may be taught first in this academic year. For this reason and to enable you to view the whole curriculum as part of our consultation, information about what the curriculum includes is provided for each year group.
